What to Taste on Your Tour to Russia

National cuisine, especially its signature dishes, can often tell the story of the country as well as the historic museums and other landmarks.

Even so, delicious flavors can quickly become closely associated with the name of the place like spicy pizza in Italy, fresh croissants in France, fish and chips in the UK, and burgers in the U.S.A.

Which dish pops into your head when you hear the name - Russia? When it comes to Russian food we believe a signature should definitely be "Pelmeni". The dish can remind you of Dumplings in Japan, Manty in Turkey and Ravioli in Italy but is unique to Russia and originates from Siberia. By the way, the idea of preserving the dish by freezing and canning it came from the need to have fresh, fulfilling lunch during long hunting trips in the cold season.

What is more, there are plenty of choices in the supermarkets when it comes to this Russian delicacy, however, nothing can compare to the "Pelmeni" cooked at home. Preparing the dish used to be a special family ritual that could even take several days.

So this week we sent our rep Vera to one of the best restaurants in Saint Petersburg - Arka (en. Arch). Watch the video below to learn more about the place where you could enjoy lunch, dinner or a cooking class on your tour to Russia, and of course, discover the art behind cooking Russian delight "Pelmeni".

If you wish to make the dish at home, here is the "Pelmeni" recipe:

  • 400 gr flour
  • 10 eggs: only yolks
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 20 ml of olive oil
  • 500 gr of meat (300gr of pork and 200gr of beef)
  • 1 onion
  • parsley
  • black pepper and salt

When your "Pelmeni" are boiled, serve them with butter and sour cream for the mouthwatering taste! You can also try eating like a true Russian, following their superstitions at the table.

Priyatnogo appetita! Enjoy!
