Why Visit the City of Samarkand

Samarkand is an ancient oriental city located in the valley of the river Zerafshan. The majestic city is as old as Babylon and Rome and was the capital of Temur’s empire in the 14th century. Samarkand is a true gem of the east included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Samarkand takes its name from old Persian, meaning “Stone Fort” or “Rock Town”. Its unique monuments of ancient architecture and artisan workshops, such as the Gijduvan ceramic workshops, are well-known around the world.

Samarkand tour always makes the travelers feel as if they're travelling back in time when they look at buildings like the Gur Emir mausoleum (Tomb of the king). It is one of the most significant architectural ensembles of medieval East built in 1404. The gorgeous tomb of Amir Timur and his descents is renowned for its marvelous decorative and architectural art.

Another extraordinary gem of Samarkand is the Ulugh Beg Observatory built in the 1420's. The observatory is a large round building decorated with glazed tiles, majolica and mosaic. It is considered by scholars to have been one of the finest observatories in the Islamic world.
