Why Visit York, United Kingdom

York is among the oldest cities in the United Kingdom. Founded by the Romans in 71 A.D. as a military fort, the city evolved as a major trading hub and cloth manufacturer.

The historic city is most famous for its medieval walls and gates, as such the Micklegate is one of the many well-preserved gates in York.

The most iconic and best-recognized symbol of the city to put on your York itinerary is the York Minster cathedral. The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York is one of the largest of its kind. It took more than 250 years to construct it between 1220 and 1472. The Gothic-style cathedral that stands today is the most modern building (the first church on the site was built in 627).

Because York was a Viking capital in the 10th century the city conserves many remnants of the time period, with best relics displayed in the Jorvik Viking Center.

Another place worth visiting during your York tour is the York Castle, originally built by William the Conqueror in 1068. The building is part of the extensive complex (former prison site) including the York Castle Museum, Clifford's Tower, a mill, and more.
