Visit St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev, Ukraine

In order to rival Constantinople's influence in the region, the St. Sofia Cathedral was built to spread Orthodox beliefs through the power of beautiful art. Originally the burial place of Kievan rulers, the cathedral fell into despair after being pillaged by the Kievan Dukes in 1169 and then by the Mongols in 1240.

This testament to Kievan Russ continues to impress today, as it attracts millions of visitors each year and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The St. Sofia Cathedral now inspires visitors with its large scope, impeccable design, and the beautiful artwork that compromises its ceilings and walls.

Like many Eastern Orthodox churches, St. Sophia Cathedral contains green onion-domes with golden tips for an exquisite view. These onion-domes were originally created in order to reach the heavens. Even today, these iconic domes are inseparable from Orthodox churches. Inside the cathedral, there are painted murals that provide viewers with a unique spiritual experience. During the Soviet Union, party officials ordered the church to be destroyed, but thanks to the combined efforts of scientists and historians, the church was allowed to remain.

As one of the most beautiful churches in the world, St. Sofia Cathedral continues to impress visitors with its delicate beauty and spiritual essence.
