Why Visit the Stockholm Subway
Visit a gigantic art gallery for the price of a subway ticket! Often referred to as the world's most extensive art exhibit, the Stockholm Metro tells a story that extends from the artistic pioneers of the 1950s to the art experiments of today.
Stockholm metro art
The subway in Stockholm (called Stockholms tunnelbana) is unlike any other metro system in the world as more than 90 of the 100 stations, making up the three lines, feature unique pieces of artwork created by about 150 artists. You can see sculptures, mosaics, paintings, art installations, inscriptions and reliefs, for this reason, it is called 'the world's longest art gallery'.
Interestingly, some of the stations had to actually be "carved" out of cliffs and rock during their construction, explaining many of the rugged ceilings and cave-like walls which can be seen in the stations.
Most beautiful stations
Among the most picturesque stations worth adding to your Stockholm itinerary are: T-Centralen, Solna Centrum, Tekniska Högskolan, and Stadion Station.
Apart from being a brilliant art exhibition, the Stockholm Metro is a great way of getting around town and its suburbs. Bottom line: traveling by subway in this city is simply an awesome way to get a real Stockholm experience.
