The Legendary Norway Railway
The Flamsbana Railway is regarded as a masterpiece of Norwegian engineering as is one of the world's steepest railway lines on normal gauge. The twisting tunnels that spiral in and out of the mountain are the result of the most daring and skillful engineering in Norwegian railway history.
The Oslo - Flam train started carrying passengers in 1941. As of now it has been operating more than seventy years and is one of the main tourist attractions in Norway.
The Flamsbana line stretches for 20 km, has ten stations, twenty tunnels, and one bridge.
The train route starts in the highest located Myrdal station (866m above sea level) and ends in the village Flam. The village is nestled in the innermost corner of the stunningly picturesque Aurlandsfjord, a branch of Sognefjord - Norway's longest fjord. During the one hour long route, the Flamsbana train crosses the Flam valley and river three times, simultaneously revealing waterfall cascades, steep mountains, and breathtaking views.
